New recreation area is in the works

Eight miles north of where the Mississippi River starts in Minnesota North, Park officials have taken the first step in forming a new State recreation area. Open house Thursday to help start the process to create a plan to guide the development of the La Salle Lake State Recreation Area North Itasca State Park.

Department of Natural Resources over 1,000 acres acquired the property at the end of October. This area will cover the entire coastline of La Salle, Lake, a Lake 213-foot-deep, 221-acre in Hubbard County.

Legislators authorized a new recreation area during a session in 2011, with funds coming from the amendment and grant from the heritage 2008 Heritage Council Lessard-Sams Outdoor most. The Master plan will include recommendations for managing natural and cultural resources and provide recreation and interpretive opportunities for visitors.

This site is currently open for limited hiking, fishing, hunting and trapping.
